What
should I do if I receive a Bad Check?
1. Always obtain Identification when accepting checks. A Connecticut Operator's License is the best form of I.D. Record the 9-digit number on the check. Compare photo on license with party passing the check. Court Will Not Accept Complaints Without Verifying I.D.
After receiving a bad check (NFS/Account Closed):
2.Make a good faith effort to resolved the situation on your own by contacting the issuing party.
3. Having no success under Item #1, send the issuing party a letter by certified mail. This brief letter requests payment within eight (8) days and should include the following data:
A) Check number
B) Amount
C) Return receipt
This letter serves a formal notice that the check was refused by the bank. Obtain the return receipt from the post office.
4. After eight (8) days (from date of postmark) have elapsed, contact the Cromwell Police Department Detective Division to make a complaint. Call before coming in to briefly review the circumstances of your complaint.
5. At a pre-arranged time come to the Cromwell Police Department with:
A) Check number
B) Amount
C) Return receipt
6. A brief statement will be obtained from you at this time which serves as your complaint.
